In 2005, the guys behind ‘Stylus’ hosted the first ever Yellow Reunion, and since then it’s been an annual event, attracting many of the original crowd but a huge number of new converts too; the Yellow Reunion is now a highlight in Manchester’s clubbing calender.

It’s our great pleasure to announce the forthcoming ‘Yellow’ 4th annual reunion!! This year is going to be very special; it’s the first time we’ve been able to bring together all three of the original Yellow DJs; Dave Haslam, Jason Boardman, and Elliot Eastwick. In addition, we have a special guest; the star of so many Southport Weekenders, Dr Bob Jones.

Launched in 1992, ‘Yellow’ at the Boardwalk dominated Friday nights in Manchester for seven years, a magical mix of people getting off on classic New York disco, rare groove, deep funk, and bass-shakin’ hip hop right up until its final night in February 1999.

In 2005, the guys behind ‘Stylus’ hosted the first ever Yellow Reunion, and since then it’s been an annual event, attracting many of the original crowd but a huge number of new converts too; the Yellow Reunion is now a highlight in Manchester’s clubbing calender.

This year (2008) we’re hosting the Yellow Reunion at Mo-Ho Live in Manchester’s Northern Quarter on Saturday April 26th. The venue has two rooms, and – stand by! quality tunes alert! – each of the DJs on the night will play two sets; throwing down the big Yellow classics in the main room, and showcasing a selection of hidden gems and personal favourites in the second room.

In 1987 our special guest, Dr Bob Jones, DJ’ed at the first Southport Dance Weekender, and 20 years on, he’s still an essential member of the Southport DJ team; he’s in A&R at the celebrated Chillifunk label, and has worked with artists of the calibre of the Temptations, Bobby Womack, and Al Green. Bob Jones is also one of the few DJs to have guested twice at Yellow during its original time at the Boardwalk; which makes this April’s the most authentic and exciting Yellow Reunion to date.

Original ‘Yellow’ residents Dave Haslam, Jason Boardman and Elliot Eastwick have also been associated with a variety of other credible and successful nights. In addition to his DJing career, Elliot Eastwick is now a film-maker, quiz-master and radio presenter. Jason Boardman hosts the highly-respected, long-running ‘Aficionado’ monthly in Manchester and has recently launched the ‘Bunch of 45s’ night. Dave Haslam is well-known in his role as a resident DJ at the Hacienda, and has since built a reputation as a writer, guest DJ’s throughout Europe, hosts a show on XFM Manchester, and fronts the ‘Sweet Sensation’ parties.

The line-up is completed by Chris E, one of Manchester’s brightest young DJ talents whose funk-filled sounds regularly feature at ‘Out of the Gloom’.

This will be a wonderful event. You’ll hear Shannon’s ‘Let the Music Play’, Gwen McCrae, Bobby Byrd, ‘Mr Big Stuff’, Salsoul classics, Talkin’ Loud’s greatest hits, Chaka Khan, Marvin Gaye, Masters at Work, ‘Let No Man Put Asunder’, ‘Fantasy’, the Sugarhill Gang, and ‘Unfinished Sympathy’. Expect also, queues round the block and a selection of soul-stirring tunes that’ll blow you away.

It’s our great pleasure to announce the forthcoming ‘Yellow’ 3rd annual reunion!! This year we’re presenting a unique line-up of DJs who together have been at the forefront of some of Manchester’s most-loved club nights, from the 1980s street soul, rare groove, and electro scenes, to the best funk, disco, and balearic nights currently in the city.

Taking place on Friday 27th April at Urbis (Cathedral Gardens, Manchester M4 3BG), the ‘Yellow’ reunion features two of the original ‘Yellow’ DJs Dave Haslam and Jason Boardman, plus Darren Laws (Fat City) and also two very special guests; Mike Shaft and Greg Wilson.

Mike Shaft is a key figure on the Manchester soul scene. In addition to his work on the DJ decks back in the day at Manchester clubs like Placemate 7, Rafters, and Rufus, his ‘Takin’ Care of Business’ show on Piccadilly Radio (1978-86) was unmissable. He was then the driving force behind Sunset Radio, keeping the faith, and broadcasting to inner city Manchester in the early 1990s.

Greg Wilson is an electro funk pioneer; and one of the heroes of the British dance music scene. His reputation was made with his groundbreaking electro sets on Wednesday nights at Legend in Manchester from 1982-84, but more recently his ‘Credit to the Edit’ compilation cemented his reputation among a new generation of clubbers; and he’s currently a regular guest DJ at club nights like the Electric Chair, Fabric, and Back To Basics.

Launched in 1992, ‘Yellow’ at the Boardwalk dominated Friday nights in Manchester for seven years, attracting a magical mix of people getting off on New York disco, rare groove, deep funk, and classic soul right up until its final night in February 1999. Dave Haslam and Jason Boardman have also been associated with other credible and successful nights. Jason Boardman is a former resident at ‘Hard Times’ who still hosts the highly-respected, long-running ‘Aficionado’ monthly in Manchester. Dave Haslam is well-known in his role as a resident DJ at the Hacienda, and has since built a reputation as a writer, guest DJs throughout Europe, hosts a show on XFM Manchester, and fronts the ‘Sweet Sensation’ parties.

The line-up is completed by Fat City’s Darren Laws, a regular at ‘Friends & Family’, and one of the DJ team at Panacea.

Urbis is a fabulously modern exhibition centre in the heart of Manchester which is dedicated to examining and celebrating city life and is thus the perfect venue for an event featuring history-making DJs. We are used to hearing about the Hacienda and Northern Soul, but this ‘Yellow’ reunion brings together a line-up of DJ legends who represent and understand some of the over-looked traditions in Manchester; funk, disco, and underground soul, and the city’s basement venues, black clubs, and ground-breaking nights.

This will be a wonderful event in a unique location.

It’s our great pleasure to announce the forthcoming ‘Yellow’ 2nd annual reunion!! Mention ‘Yellow’ to any self-respecting Manchester clubber and they’ll get all teary eyed – ‘Yellow’ was the place to be, with a solid and highly regarded team of residents Dave Haslam, Jason Boardman & Elliot Eastwick packed the club week in and week out without the need for regular guests. And this was all whilst the Hacienda was going on down the road.

Launched in 1992, ‘Yellow’ took place at the legendary Boardwalk and for seven years it was packed to the rafters with a hip young crowd getting off on a unique and powerful mix of music (classic New York disco, rare groove, deep funk, bass-shakin’ hip hop). Many modern day Mancunians won’t have experienced the atmosphere and music of ‘Yellow’, which is why last year (2005) the guys behind ‘Stylus’ hosted the first ever ‘Yellow’ reunion. This year (2006) it’s time for the 2nd annual reunion.

Dave Haslam; “For six years I’d resisted the temptation to do another ‘Yellow’ night because Elliot and Jason and I have all moved on and there’s too much to do in the here and now without going backwards, but I was persuaded last year by the guys who run the ‘Stylus’ night and it all seemed very honourable, and spot-on, and last year’s was a great night too, the club was packed, six hundred or so, and everyone wanted to be there, knew why they were there, and seemed to enjoy the music perhaps even more than the first time around. It was kinda emotional, of course; all those faces, the regulars. Afterwards everyone was saying we should do it more often, and here we are; a year later. It’ll be magical.”

From Dave Haslam “For six years I’ve resisted the temptation to do another ‘Yellow’ night because Elliot and Jason and I have all moved on and there’s too much to do in the here and now without going backwards, but there’s a night on every month at the Music Box called ‘Stylus’ and the Stylus boys have had some great DJs on in the past and they were keen to do a ‘Yellow reunion’, for them ‘Yellow’ as a special night too, one of the places they’d grown up in. I was won over to the idea I suppose, by their enthusiasm and by the chance to see the ‘Yellow’ regulars again. It was a great night too, the club was packed, six hundred or so, and everyone wanted to be there, knew why they were there, and seemed to enjoy the music perhaps even more than the first time around. It was kinda emotional, of course; all those faces. It reminded me what a great community of people we were surrounded by at ‘Yellow’. And reminded me why I love DJing; such a buzz!!! Afterwards everyone was saying we should do it more often, but my guess is we’ll do a ‘Yellow’ reunion once a year.”
