The 3rd Annual Yellow Reunion

The 3rd Annual Yellow Reunion

It’s our great pleasure to announce the forthcoming ‘Yellow’ 3rd annual reunion!! This year we’re presenting a unique line-up of DJs who together have been at the forefront of some of Manchester’s most-loved club nights, from the 1980s street soul, rare groove, and electro scenes, to the best funk, disco, and balearic nights currently in the city.

Taking place on Friday 27th April at Urbis (Cathedral Gardens, Manchester M4 3BG), the ‘Yellow’ reunion features two of the original ‘Yellow’ DJs Dave Haslam and Jason Boardman, plus Darren Laws (Fat City) and also two very special guests; Mike Shaft and Greg Wilson.

Mike Shaft is a key figure on the Manchester soul scene. In addition to his work on the DJ decks back in the day at Manchester clubs like Placemate 7, Rafters, and Rufus, his ‘Takin’ Care of Business’ show on Piccadilly Radio (1978-86) was unmissable. He was then the driving force behind Sunset Radio, keeping the faith, and broadcasting to inner city Manchester in the early 1990s.

Greg Wilson is an electro funk pioneer; and one of the heroes of the British dance music scene. His reputation was made with his groundbreaking electro sets on Wednesday nights at Legend in Manchester from 1982-84, but more recently his ‘Credit to the Edit’ compilation cemented his reputation among a new generation of clubbers; and he’s currently a regular guest DJ at club nights like the Electric Chair, Fabric, and Back To Basics.

Launched in 1992, ‘Yellow’ at the Boardwalk dominated Friday nights in Manchester for seven years, attracting a magical mix of people getting off on New York disco, rare groove, deep funk, and classic soul right up until its final night in February 1999. Dave Haslam and Jason Boardman have also been associated with other credible and successful nights. Jason Boardman is a former resident at ‘Hard Times’ who still hosts the highly-respected, long-running ‘Aficionado’ monthly in Manchester. Dave Haslam is well-known in his role as a resident DJ at the Hacienda, and has since built a reputation as a writer, guest DJs throughout Europe, hosts a show on XFM Manchester, and fronts the ‘Sweet Sensation’ parties.

The line-up is completed by Fat City’s Darren Laws, a regular at ‘Friends & Family’, and one of the DJ team at Panacea.

Urbis is a fabulously modern exhibition centre in the heart of Manchester which is dedicated to examining and celebrating city life and is thus the perfect venue for an event featuring history-making DJs. We are used to hearing about the Hacienda and Northern Soul, but this ‘Yellow’ reunion brings together a line-up of DJ legends who represent and understand some of the over-looked traditions in Manchester; funk, disco, and underground soul, and the city’s basement venues, black clubs, and ground-breaking nights.

This will be a wonderful event in a unique location.
